The History of the Xα Method
Abstract
The Xα method for handling the quantum theory of atoms, molecules, and solids, has origins which go back 50 years, to the earliest days of wave mechanics. Most of the fundamental ideas were well formed by the 1930’s. After the delay of World War II, and after the development of electronic digital computers during the 1950’s, the method has been of practical value since the 1960’s. Various recent developments, including the multiple scattering Xα method, and the concept of the transition state, have been available only during the past several years, and they have led to a rapid rate of expansion in the use of the method, which is adaptable to a great variety of problems in the structure of matter.
